The living room is one of the busiest and most used areas of the house. In it, we watch TV, eat, chat with family, receive visitors and even enjoy our free time, reading a book or playing with family and friends. That is why, due to its activity and visibility, we should keep it tidy and decorated with special care. The living room is one of the most grateful and open spaces for experimentation. This comes in handy, especially for those of us who love to decorate with furniture and accessories made by ourselves, showing our ability to make our own DIY projects.
We can play with the existing decor and add a personal touch, using pieces of old furniture recovered from an attic or flea market, objects that we have always given them other uses and even beads and accessories that we had stored in a closet or in the storage room. The key is to undertake the project of decorating our living room with great enthusiasm, full of ideas and with the intention of obtaining a spectacular, unique and unrepeatable result.
We, in this article on 'DIY decoration for living rooms', will give you a few style tips to inspire you and open the doors to this exciting world. We have compiled some simple ideas that you can carry out in a very easy and comfortable way, you just have to let your creativity and experiment with materials and their possibilities!
1. Drawers of antique furniture: vintage-style shelves and tables
Antique furniture already possesses the charm of the lived, the history of the family that used it and the way it was decorated at the time. In flea markets, in your grandparents' storage room or in a thrift store, you can find beautiful furniture with drawers, which, even if they are still in disrepair, can be used to recover some of their parts and reuse them. We particularly love drawers that appear lined with fabric or aged paper, with worn handles and slightly lifted or cracked paint. In this post, we propose to use them as decorative shelves, as side tables (adding legs or casters), or as drawers to organize our sewing tools.
2. Wooden crates for fruits and vegetables, converted into furniture.
Getting these wooden crates can be very easy if you know where to look. You don't need to resort to the old wooden ones, now so fashionable at weddings and events. We are interested in the new and light wood ones, used in greengrocers to store and transport fruits and vegetables. Make friends with the grocer and ask him or her to keep a few for you, and within a week you'll have enough to decorate your living room. Fruit crates are perfect for storage: for books, records, DVDs, magazines, sofa blankets, children's or pet's toys, etc. You can also put them together and create a beautiful coffee table with side openings.
3. Vertical gardens made with pallets
Decorating with pallets is already a classic in our blog. We love how versatile a pallet can be, how much wood we can extract from it and how beautiful it looks in any place. Today we are not going to show you how to build furniture with pallets, rather we are going to give you a couple of ideas to use them (complete or fragmented) in decoration. First, we see how the full pallet is ideal for hanging your plants, expose your composition and create a panel that you can expand with more pots, candles and baskets. The second case, simpler, consists of 4 planks torn from the structure of the pallet, painted and fixed to the wall. On them, metal pots are attached, distributed at different heights.
4. Metal wire baskets with dual function: table and box
This has been one of the trendiest decorative accessories in 2021. These metal and wood side tables are available as is for sale, but it is more interesting to make them ourselves with a basket of metal rods and a wooden envelope. The great thing about these baskets is that you can place them either upwards on the base (leaving the inside free to store living room objects) or downwards, with the lid fixed on the base (leaving space to place a plant inside as a cage).
5. Wood scraps used to build honeycomb shelves.
These hexagonal shelves are still very fashionable and they are also very easy to make. All you need are some plywood slats, a pencil and a scroll saw. You can cut the timbers yourself at home or have them cut at a reputable woodworking shop.
6. Personalized messages with Scrabble pieces
This may be one of the easiest and most fun crafts to make. Just find the Scrabble box in the storage room and plan what you want to do with its pieces. You can create a message and display it in a box (as in the first case) or find four 4- or 5-letter words, related to something you like, and create coasters, placemats or mini-squares to hang on the wall.
Hanging photo compositions
Depending on the style of your home decor, you can apply some ideas or others. In the first image, we see how to use a wooden bar painted in black, attached to the wall by some nylon threads in black. These threads, not only will serve to hold the composition, but to hang your photos as a curtain. The second example shows something similar, but to execute the idea, it uses an aged and marinated branch (like the ones you can find on the seashore, dragged by the waves) from which hang some photos, held by transparent fishing line.
